Worldwide, various types of algae are grown; mostly for the food processing industry or in cosmetics. This cultivation of algae is called algal culture. For the use as biofuel the unicellular algae (microalgae) are particularly interesting; most of the microalgae have a size of 3 to 50 um. Microalgae grow relatively quickly and are doubling between 1 time per week up to 4 times a day. The cultivation of algae is very intensive and on a relatively small area, a high yield can be achieved. From the cultured algae lipids are extracted, which are used as raw material for the production of biodiesel.
